Stem cell treatments

For over 20 years, bone marrow has been used in all stem cell treatments, but for the last 8 years, fat tissue has been an increasing alternative source due to its numerous advantages. What is stem cell technology?

What are stem cells? They are cells that form a living being from one single conceived cell, cells which can continuously renew themselves by their ability to indefinitely reproduce and transform themselves to every type of cell in a living organism. Stem cells are the only substantial source for a being both to come into existence and survive. A certain percentage of adult stem cells are located in adult tissue to provide integrity and maintenance of that tissue. The mission of a stem cell is to compensate any potential tissue damage or loss due to physical injuries or illnesses. Isolating stem cells and injecting them into patients for various treatments is one of the biggest developments in the history of medical science. The most important function of stem cell treatment is to provide for deficiencies and treat the tissue to which it is applied. Whilst still young, the human body holds sufficient number of cells, but as it ages, the cells decrease locally. The function of stem cell treatment is to counteract this; it provides an “inoculation of youth” by increasing the number of stem cells in the desired area. 

Where are the stem cells and what are their functions?

Cells in adult tissue structure contain a small percentage of “Adult Stem Cells” which are able to reproduce a specific tissue or similar tissues to provide that specific tissue area with integrity and maintenance. These stem cells are known to have multipotent character, because they will differentiate from the tissue cells in the next level, known as  initiator tissue cells. The job of these cells is to compensate and repair any tissue damage or loss due to injuries or illness. An example of this might be finger injuries, where this technique can heal the wound.

What are the uses of stem cells?

Stem cell operations can be used for cosmetic purposes:

  Stem cell treatment on the face removes fine lines that form over time due to decreasing collagen and elastin fibres. It can also repair wrinkles and sagginess on skin and rejuvenate as well as treating acne and other scars and marks on the skin.

  Stem cell treatment on the neck and chest area treats the effects of tissue loss with age; dermal and subdermal sagginess, wrinkles and spots.

  Stem cell treatment on the back of the hands is used for treating the ‘marbled’ look that appears with age due to tissue loss. It can also help with sagginess and sun damage spots.

  Stem cell treatment on the hair is performed to prevent fragility and loss of hair as well as hair that is weak and dull for a variety of reasons. It will re-train the healthy and abundant hair structure back.

  Stem cell treatment on the breasts is used for augmentation on patients with enough fat tissue or for reconstruction following a breast cancer treatment.

How are stem cells produced, how is the treatment done?

Generally, a certain amount of fat is harvested from the patient’s body. This procedure is carried out during sedation or local anaesthesia. The amount of fat varies depending on the area of application. Using a special procedure; the cells are then separated from this fat block in a laboratory and in 1 to 2 hours, adult stem cells isolation is complete. These stem cells derive from the patient’s own fat tissue, which is then injected back again using a specific procedure. This method is extremely effective and safe when carried out by an experienced and expert team.

  It involves no allergy risk. The procedure uses patient’s own cells, so no reactions occur.

  No lengthy rest time is needed post treatment.

Why fat-derived stem cells?

Stem cells can be extracted in different ways. The most common ways used in aesthetic surgery and stem cell treatments are fat-derived and bone marrow-derived methods. There are various reasons why fat-derived stem cells are seen to be more favourable. An important advantage is that there are 500 times more stem cells in every cubic centimetre of fat tissue compared to bone marrow. 1 gr of fat tissue has approximately 1 million stem cells. Also, compared to a fat-derived alternative, bone barrow-derived stem cells are more difficult to enhance and therefore result in a longer surgical procedure. Patients with fat-derived stem cell treatment not only rejuvenate by putting back what is lost in their body but they also benefit by disposing of their excess fat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the differences between fat-derived stem cell treatment and PRP?

PRP is the method where a certain amount of patient’s own plasma is put into a special tube, centrifuged and growth factors that are separated out of the blood cells are applied on the patient’s skin. On the other hand, the fat-derived stem cells method is the injection of stem cells after liposuction of the fat from patient’s body and cultivating it with certain procedures to produce the stem cells that produce those growth factors continuously. PRP treatment needs to be repeated in order to achieve the desired result. Stem Cell treatment is a one-time procedure. Depending on the area of application, add-on-therapies can increase the persistency. 

What are the differences between stem cell treatment and Fibrogell application? Which one is preferable?

Fat-derived stem cell treatment’s advantage over Fibrogell is that the injected fat tissue replaces the deficiencies of the skin rapidly and for longer periods of time. While stem cell treatment is applied the same day and clear results are visible, in Fibrogell treatment; a small sample of cells are taken from behind your ear and are reproduced in special conditions in the laboratory for 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks this material is injected to the patient in a clinical environment. Briefly; Fibrogell application is more skin oriented while stem cell treatment is intended for both skin and sub-dermal tissue loss.

Is there a minimum age for stem cell treatment?

Since a person’s own cells are used, it is appropriate for any age group. Therefore, there is no minimum or maximum age limits for the stem cell treatment procedures.

Are there any risks of an allergic reaction during or following to the treatment?

Since the procedure uses patients’ own cells which are actually produced from their own body, processed and injected back, it involves no risk of an allergic reaction.

Does it involve any pain following the stem cell treatment?

Following the treatment, no rest is needed. Patients can go back to their daily routines right after the procedure. Generally, no pain is felt.

Are there any side effects of stem cell treatments?

No side effects are involved since the stem cells are derived from patient’s own body.

Is it possible to apply stem cell treatment on more than one area at the same time for one person?

Depending on the needs of the patient it is possible to apply the treatment on more than one area. Most of the time a total cure of face, neck and chest areas gives effective results.

Does stem cell treatment need to be carried out in hospital?

This depends on the area of application. It can be applied in a hospital as well as in a clinic with experienced and expert teams. Breast augmentation or reconstruction needs to be carried out in a hospital since the procedure is done on sedation or general anaesthesia. On the other hand, stem cell treatments on hair, hand, face and neck-chest areas can be applied with local anaesthesia in a clinic as well as hospitals.
