Ear Procedures / Otoplasty

No need to hide your ears! No visible scars either…

- This is performed to narrow the degree of the earlap and/or decrease the proportion of the ear.
- It is performed without general anaesthesia but by sedation and/or local anaesthesia.
- The operation takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
- The patient is released to go home that same day.
- The operation is carried out behind the ear, so no visual scars are left.
- Pain is treated with recommended pain killers. A head band is recommended for 2 weeks after the release of plasters on day 2.
- Normal life is resumed in 3 to 5 days.

Why and how are ear aesthetic operations carried out?

The first surgeries that come to mind when it comes to ear aesthetics are prominent ear surgeries and ear reduction surgery. In the prominent ear operations, the main aim is to reduce the angle between the ear and head. The angle between the head and the ear flap is normally 30 to 35 degrees, and in prominent ear (otoplasty) operations, we create this ideal angle. In other words, the ear is inclined towards the back of the head and the angle of the ear with the head is reduced. Angle distortion in the ear is an easily concealable condition, especially in women, but it is not easy to conceal in men and people with short hair. Although this problem seems like a minor problem for people who do not have prominent ears, it is well known to affect the  self-esteem of a person.

Another area of application for ear aesthetics is ear reduction. The goal of this approach is to eliminate the shape and/or size issues. During this operation, the ear is brought to a well-proportioned size and shape that no longer attracts attention.

How long does ear aesthetic surgeries last?

Ear aesthetic surgeries are done under local anaesthesia and/or sedation and completed in half an hour.

When can the patient go back to normal life after ear aesthetics surgery?

The patient can return home on the same day after the operation. Compression wraps are applied on both ears and we will reecommended wearing a hair band (the type of band that tennis players use) for a few days after the wraps are released. The wrap reduces the load and oedema on the sutures, helps reduce swelling and prevents sutures from coming into contact with the pillow at night. A slight swelling and redness might be experienced for 3 to 5 days but the patient should return to normal after this period has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main factors to be considered before a prominent ear surgery?

As with all surgical procedures, it is necessary to avoid using blood thinners, limit alcohol consumption and smoking as much as possible before the operation and ideally stop altogether in the two days leading up to the surgery.

What factors should be considered after the surgery?

After ear aesthetics surgery, compression wraps are applied on both ears for two days and we recommend wearing a hair band or tennis headband for a few days after the wraps are released.  Hair can be washed once the compression wraps come off. Patients can start walking two weeks after and regular exercise three weeks after the surgery. Patients should avoid using hairdryers for a few days following the operation.

What is the minimum age for ear aesthetic operations?

Plastic surgery is generally not recommended for people under the age of 18, although prominent ear operations can be carried out as soon as children complete their ear development. External ear development in children is completed at 5 to 6 years old and the ear extends to its permanent size. Therefore, the minimum age for these operations is 5 to 6 years old. There are no maximum age limitations.

Are there any scars after a prominent ear surgery?

Since the operation is performed on the back part of the ear flap, no visible scars are seen.
